Madagascar

Madagascar is in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Mozambique and is the fourth largest island in the world. 90% of the 10,000+ plants that are native to Madagascar cannot be found anywhere else in the world and some ecologists even refer to Madagascar as the ‘’eighth continent’’. Land and sea there is endless biodiversity, from sea turtles, dolphins, chameleons, octopus, sharks, lemurs and even humpback whales

PETER Diving is the new addition on the island but Madagascar is already an established destination for a huge variety of watersports including windsurfing, kitesurfing, deep sea fishing, wildlife tours and kayaking. With this experience and the charm and kindness of the local Malagasy people you can be sure that Madagascar is a great bet for a diving holiday!

Diving in Madagascar

There is an endless variety of sights to be seen underwater in Madagascar with our PETER Diving System. There are over 400 species of coral and some of the most diverse coral reefs in the world. Divers can visit The Island of Ste Marie, on the east coast, for its amazing wrecks, Pointe Alebrand- a truly beautiful dive, a sandy bed with granite boulders where you can expect to see larger pelagic fish, grey sharks, manta rays and barracuda and sometimes even migrating humpback whales. And also Nosy Be- Undoubtably the best diving area with a perfect depth for using the PETER Diving System, here you can expect to see colourful reef fish, frogfish, angelfish, coral fans, scorpionfish, leopard sharks and even whale sharks!

The depth range for most sights in Madagascar is between 5 and 40 meters (15 and 130 feet). Average open water temperature ranges from 28°C (82°F) in the Spring to 23°C (74°F) in the Summer.

For one period every year, 10% of the world's population of humpback whales migrate to the sea surrounding Madagascar. They can be seen from Fort Dauphin, Nosy Be and Isle Sainte Marie. The whales come from the Antarctic between june and september to breed in Madagascar's warmer seas. The whales show an incredible mating display and during this period it also possible to see the mothers swimming with their calves. A truly spectacular phenomenon!
