Malaysia

Malaysia is known most for its equatorial rainforest and seemingly endless wildlife on land and sea. Some of the most ancient ecosystems on earth remain intact. Significant areas of jungle are protected by national parks and conservation projects with colourful birdlife, silvered leaf monkeys and orangutangs. But the most bountiful wildlife is sure to be found in the oceans- you can dive here among shoals of tropical fish, colourful corals, sharks, turtles and dolphins. 

The diving in Malaysia is divided into 2 parts. In the East there is Sabah province, the Malaysian Borneo. This side features some of the best diving in the world for big fishes such as Layang Layang and Sipadan. Borneo is one of the few places in the world where you can spot hundreds of Hammerhead Sharks in a single dive. The best dive resorts are located on the beautiful and small islands of Sabah, which are often fringed with white sand beaches, palms and coconut trees- a beautiful tropical setting to complement the excellent diving. 

The West side is known as Peninsular Malaysia and it features many islands, among which some of the the most beautiful in the world such as the Perhentians Islands, Redang, Tioman and Langkawi Islands. These islands are frequented by several turtle species including the green sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle. Besides turtles, on this side you can expect to dive with blacktip sharks, leopard sharks and large schools of yellowtail snapper. For the truly brave- on Tenggol Island, whale shark sightings are possible during July to August. 

Depending on season and location the air temperature is between 25°C to 32 °C (77°F to 89°F), Average visibility is between 5m-60m (16ft-196ft), average water temperature is from 26°C to 30°C (78°F to 86°F) and depth is from 5m-40m (16ft-131ft), with generally shallow coral reefs.

On the whole, you will encounter on all the diving places in Malaysia a great marine life and superb coral. In many sites, you can spot Manta Rays and huge schools of pelagic fishes. Reef Sharks and turtles are also very common. Local monsoon forbid diving at certain times of the year in some places, with the wet season running from November to March, but generally diving is available all year.
